Halton Castle

Halton Castle stands on a prominent rocky hill overlooking the River Mersey. A location which must have been chosen for its "elevated position and excellent potential as an observation post". It was also an easily defensible site, a military stronghold capable of repelling attack.

The Castle Hotel public house is set within the historic wall of the castle in what was originally the 18th century courthouse. The Castle Hotel public house is open normal licencing hours.
You can walk around the outside of the castle walls at any time. Parking outside the public house is limited.

Norton Priory is pleased to be managing the historic site of Halton Castle. Over the coming months, further work will be undertaken at the Castle which will make it more accessible to visitors.
